Ivy kindly shared her wonderful memories of the area surrounding the library with us via Facebook: 'I do hope that this building is saved completely. I used to live just off Green Lane (Sandstone Road) and I passed by this building three months ago, but because of roadworks at the time I didn't go closer to this building. I can remember starting at Lister Drive School but we moved out of sandstone road when I was six! I was fortunate to visit Lister Drive Junior School before it was destroyed by fire and demolished. I hope you manage to re-claim this building. There were SO MANY iconic buildings around this area that have gone - the power station, the turquoise blue hall that was in a road opposite the library, where I can remember Lister Drive School had a concert for the children where they had a comic on dressed all in white! I could go on... the big bus depot nearly opposite Sandstone Road. All gone! ... I would like to hear you have saved this lovely building. I have been lucky enough to see Carnegie libraries in the USA!' |
